AUTO SECTOR UPDATE = FEBRUARY,2011 SALES = EXCELLENT SALES PERFORMANCE BY ALL PLAYERS = IN PINK OF HEALTH


Indian auto industry  February 2011 sales

Maruti Suzuki India

Maruti Suzuki India Limited sold a total of 1,11,645 vehicles in February 2011, including 10,102 units of exports. It had sold a total of 96,650 vehicles in February 2010.

It sold 1,01,543 units in domestic market, up 19.8 per cent over corresponding month last year. Sales were up 19.4 per cent in A2 and 27 per cent in A3 segment. In C segment, company recorded a growth of 26.9 per cent.

In February 2011, Maruti Suzuki launched the Super Turbo Diesel SX4. During the month, it also launched the Luxury Sporty Kizashi sedan. The Kizashi units despatched in February are display / test drive vehicles for dealers. Deliveries of Kizashi to customers will begin this month.

Tata Motors

Total sales (including exports) of Tata commercial and passenger vehicles in February 2011 were 77,543 vehicles, a growth of 12% over 69,427 vehicles sold in February 2010. The domestic sales of Tata commercial and passenger vehicles for February 2011 were 73,039 nos., 10% growth over 66,190 nos. sold in February last year.

Cumulative sales (including exports) for the fiscal are 719,959 nos., a growth of 27% over 567,535 nos. sold last year.

Commercial Vehicles

Sales of commercial vehicles in February 2011 in domestic market were 41,130 nos., a 5% growth compared to 39,205 vehicles sold in February last year. LCV sales were 23,498 nos., a growth of 8% over February last year. M&HCV sales stood at 17,632 nos., a growth of 1% over February last year.

Cumulative sales of commercial vehicles in domestic market for the fiscal are 397,029 nos., a growth of 20% over last year. Cumulative LCV sales are 228,239 nos., a growth of 16% over last year, while M&HCV sales stood at 168,790 nos., a growth of 26% over last year.

Passenger Vehicles

Passenger vehicles business reported a total sale and distribution offtake of 33,751 nos. (31,909 Tata + 1,842 Fiat) in the domestic market in February 2011, higher by 15% compared to 29,238 nos. (26,985 Tata + 2,253 Fiat) in February last year.

Sales of Tata passenger vehicles are 31,909 nos., higher by 18% over February 2010.

Sales of the Tata Nano were 8,262 nos., higher by 101% over February last year.

Indica range sales were 10, 044 nos., lower by 12.7% over February last year. The Indigo range recorded sales of 8,966 nos., a growth of 22% over February last year. The Sumo/ Safari/ Aria/ Venture range accounted for sales of 4, 637 nos., higher by 16% over February last year.

Jaguar Land Rover sales continued their upward trend.

Cumulative sales and distribution offtake of passenger vehicles in the domestic market for the fiscal are 289,695 nos. (270,818 Tata + 18,877 Fiat), against 229,789 nos. (207,169 Tata + 22,620 Fiat) last year, a growth of 26%.

Cumulative sales of Tata passenger vehicles were 270,818 nos., a 31% increase compared to 207,169 nos., in February last year. Cumulative sales of the Nano are 61,725 nos., a 141% increase compared to 25,640 nos., in February last year.  

Cumulative sales of the Indica range are 90,908 nos., lower by 11%. Cumulative sales of the Indigo family are 80,728 nos., higher by 64%. Cumulative sales of the Sumo/Safari/ Aria range are 37,457 nos., higher by 26%.

Exports

Sales from exports at 4,504 vehicles in February 2011 registered a growth of 39% compared to 3,237 vehicles in February last year. Cumulative sales from exports for the fiscal at 52,112 nos. are higher by 73% over 30,036 nos. in the same period last year.
OTHER NEWS ON TATA MOTORS :

Tata Motors has plans to build its car plants outside India - for cars like Indica, Indigo and Nano.

The company is also looking forward to open dealership networks in counties where it has no presence at all.

 Tata Motors have hired Johnny Oommen, the former BMW sales head in Qatar to spearhead its international business in passenger cars.

HERO HONDA MOTORS

Hero Honda, Market leader in two wheelers reported a growth of 23.54% in the month of Feb 2011 that stood at 472055 units compared to 382096 units same time last year.

The company has witnessed itS 10th continuous month to reach 4-lakh units sold in a single month. The company has sold 4886592 units during April 2010 to February 2011 at growth of 16.75% compared to 4185492 units same time last year.

Anil Dua Hero Honda Motors Senior Vice-President (Marketing and Sales) said “Our performance throughout this fiscal has been very consistent and the strong February numbers are a positive indication for the growth to continue. The company’s scooter model ‘Pleasure’ continues to do exceedingly well with clocking an average of 30,000 units a month”.

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd announced a 20% rise in its auto sales numbers, which stood at 33378 units during February 2011  as against 27894 units during February 2010.  

Domestic sales stood at 31967 units during February 2011, as against 26580 units during February 2010, an increase of 20%. 

Passenger Vehicles segment (which includes the UVs as well as the Logan) registered a growth of 16%, having sold 15439 units in February 2011, as against 13350 units during February 2010.   The 4 wheel pick-up segment has registered a growth of 13%, while the 3-wheelers segment has grown by an impressive 57%. 

Speaking on the numbers, Rajesh Jejurikar, Chief Executive, Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra said, “It is a good sign that the auto sector has been maintaining a healthy double digit growth.  All our brands have being doing well with the Logan having clocked a sale of 1151 units in February 2011, which is more than a 110% growth compared to February 2010.  With the launch of the Genio last month, we hope to further consolidate our position in the pick-up segment”.

TVS MOTORS

Significant growth from across all segments backed by strong contributions from scooters, buoyant exports and domestic sales has facilitated 24% growth in overall sales for TVS Motor Company during February 2011. It sold 177,412 units in February 2011 against 142,676 units in the same month of the previous year. Its cumulative sales for the period April 2010 to February 2011 stood at 1,855,460 units.

Two Wheeler

Total two wheeler sales of the company recorded a growth of 23 % with sales of 173,200 units in February 2011 against 140,544 units reported in February 2010.

Cumulative two wheeler sales for the period April 2010 to February 2011 increased by 32% with sales of 1,820,027 units over 1,375,176 units in April to February 2010.

Domestic sales of the company grew by 25% with sales of 151,526 units in February 2011 against 121,403 units registered in February 2010.

Scooter sales continued to impress growing by 49% with sales of 40,335 units as against 27,017 units recorded in February 2010. Motorcycles grew by 13% growth accounting for sales of 71,462 units in February 2011 as against 63,394 units in February 2010.

Exports

Exports accounted for 24,036 units of overall sales, increasing 13% over the same month of the previous year, with two wheelers accounting for 21,674 units.

Three Wheeler

Three wheeler sales of the company touched a new high in February 2011with sales of 4,212 units of three wheelers against 2,132 units sold in the comparable month of the previous year. Cumulative three wheeler sales for the period April 2010 to February 2011 grew by 181% with sales of 35,433 units against 12,549 units.

COMMENTS 

As can be seen from the above numbers, all the Auto Majors are performing quite well in India – right up to February,2011.

While Raw Material Prices may be a concern – yet, the heartening sales numbers make the sector a GOOD PERFORMER as far as Investors are concerned.

While all layers are performing at their BEST, TATA MOTORS  with its Global ambitions and improving Technology has Potential to outpace many others in the days to come.
