HOW NIFTY FIFTY MOVED IN 2011? = INTERESTING INSIGHTS = WHAT 2012 FORETELLS?

HOW NIFTY FIFTY
MOVED IN 2011?

The following is the list of NIFTY 50 STOCKS, their 52 week Highs and Lows, their 365 days % change and their 30days % change arranged in order of their 365 days % change.

These are extracted as on 09.01.2011. Readers may correct me if there are any errors in my extraction of data or interpretation. The Data presents interesting insights into the various scrips’ movements in 2011.

Everything was not gloomy in 2011. The whole house did not crumble into pieces. There were strong pillars standing here and there. This is a consoling feature.

As we can see, Hindustan Uniliver actually had a good 27.59% positive change in last 365 days and a 2.86% change in last 30 days. ITC had a positive change of 18.99% in 365 days and 3.57% in last 30 days.

So, who says- FMCG was in the dumps?

Ambuja Cements too has good positive change of 20.05% in 365 days and 0.07% in 30 days. Curiously, the three cement Biggies – Ambuja, ACC and Grasim did not lose market value in 2011 – though construction sector wasn’t great in 2011.

Among the Biggest losers, we find 3 ADAG companies – namely, R.Com, R POWER and R INFRA all of which lost over 40% in last 365 days. They are of course in sectors which are presently beset with problems. It seems – Anil Ambani has to put a lot of things together to get them out of the mess they are in.

SAIL, SESA GOA, STERLITE, HINDALCO, TATA STEEL, JP ASSOCIATES – are also among TOP losers in NIFTY 50. All of them (except JP Associates) are in metals.
Sesa Goa and Sterlite belong to Vedanta Group , in which CAIRN is the odd one out, which did not lose market value in 2011.

TATA Steel has again got into European woes – apart from Indian woes, which beset SAIL and itself.

In the Banking sector, Kotakbank and HDFC Bank did not lose market value – while ICICI BANK, PNB and AXIS BANK lost big. SBI  was the heaviest loser in Banking space.

L&T and BHEL, who are competitors of some sorts in many areas , are equal losers – losing around 38% each.

TCS and INFY did not lose too – and they in terms of results, their performance was good. But, HCL Tech and Wipro lost good market value, though not very heavily.

Bajaj Auto gained some what and Hero lost somewhat. But, their results throughout the year were not Bad at all. And their current aggressive moves are heartening. Hope they will make it big in 2012.

In TATA Group, not only TATA STEEL, but, TATA Power also lost heavily. TATA MOTORS also lost, but not so heavily. TCS was the star which did not lose - in TATA  Group.

In Pharma sector, Sun Pharma and CIPLA did not lose, Dr.Reddy lost just a little, but Ranbaxy lost heavily.

Reliance lost 30.52%. It has big plans. In fact – mega plans. Will it succeed in 2012? For the health of the Market, and for the health of the Nation, I think, we must wish Reliance to succeed.

Most people are gloomy right now about 2012. Yes. In the absence of any great moves by Government and RBI – this is justified. But, the tempo is building up. Even PSU Banks seem to be asking for Rate Cuts now. RBI can’t be sitting on its high pedestal for long. It has to comply and help in growth process. Likewise, Government has to move in with some of the vexatious, long pending Bills, like Land acquisition Bill – so that Power sector, steel sector ,mining sector etc can move on. These can happen in 2012 – if Poilitics takes a little Back seat.

Hope therefore that 2012 will bring in High Hopes for economy and Markets.
